BSB Sanlitun Student Tests Positive for COVID-19

Yesterday (Oct 3) The British School of Beijing (BSB), Sanlitun confirmed that a Year 1 student in the Panthers class tested positive for COVID-19.
Beijing had just surpassed its new record of 57 consecutive days without a local infection, the most since the Xinfadi infection was confirmed back in June. However, we are told that this is not treated as a new case, but as a reactivation, since the child had COVID-19 before and was asymptomatic. Students and families in Years 1 and 2 at BSB Sanlitun are instructed to quarantine at home for two weeks.
“We can confirm that a student at BSB Sanlitun has tested positive for novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is being treated as a reactivation rather than a newly confirmed case. In line with recommendations and advice from Chaoyang Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, we have provided a comprehensive list of those who had direct contact with the student. All members of the school community have been informed. In conjunction with the local health authority we have taken all necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of students, colleagues and the wider school community as our top priority. We are in close communication with our student’s family, have sent our school’s best wishes and they appreciate our support,” says Chris Lawrence, Regional Director of Admissions and Marketing, China International Schools for Nord Anglia Education.

The full letter sent to parents on Saturday night is as follows:
“Dear Parents,
I am writing to let you know that a Year 1 student in our Panthers class has tested positive for novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is being treated as a reactivation rather than a newly confirmed case. The child is asymptomatic and doing well, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school once they have made a full recovery, but in the meantime, we are following the recommendations and advice from Chaoyang Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We have provided the CDC with contact details for all families with a child in our Year 1 Panthers class, as well as any staff members or classmates who had close interactions with the student.
We do not believe your child had any direct contact with the student, however we have been advised that all children in year 1 and Year 2 should not return to school until 15th October. Please refer to Seesaw for information on our Virtual School from 12th October.
We will continue to follow guidelines and take all necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of all students, colleagues and the wider parent community at BSB Sanlitun as a matter of priority. There are no students currently on campus due to the National Holiday and we have begun a thorough cleansing and disinfecting of the school.
We understand that you may have questions in light of this news so please get in contact with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. We will also keep you updated with any further information whenever we are able. I want to thank you for your understanding and support during this uniquely challenging time and reassure you that we are doing all we can.”
Stay tuned and we will update as we learn more. Beijingkids sends its best wishes to the families involved.
